What do IP Ratings really mean?

What do IP codes/ratings really mean?  IS/IEC 60529 explains the degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)

Protection is afforded against the following external influences:

‐ Penetration by solid bodies

‐ Protection of persons against access to live parts

‐ Protection against the ingress of dust

‐ Protection against the ingress of liquids

Figure 1 below shows an example of how the IP code is arranged. Figure 2 shows the elements of the IP Code and

their meanings.

‐ Tests establishing compliance with any one of the lower degrees of protection need not

necessarily be carried out provided that these tests would be met.

‐ An enclosure designated with a second characteristic numeral 7 or 8 only is unsuitable for

exposure to water jets.

‐ A ‘versatile’ product will meet requirements for both water jets and temporary or continuous

immersion.

‐ A ‘restricted’ product will meet only temporary or continuous immersion.
